However, the reality is a bit different. If you are living in a metro city and ride your motorcycle or scooter for daily commuting of up to 50 km, then electric bikes or scooters are the best options for you. All you need to do is charge the batteries overnight and use them for daily commuting.

Here is the list of best electric bikes and scooters in India on sale right now.

Ather 450

This had to be here, Ather is India’s best electric scooter and there is no point to argue about. Why so? Because Ather 450 offers a ton of features and it is completely researched and developed in the country which is a huge step towards self-reliant India.

The electric scooter is built around an ultra-lightweight aluminum frame with sturdy plastic panels for further weight savings. Ather 450 tips the scale at just 111 kg which is comparable to the regular petrol-powered 110cc scooters.

The electric motor is mounted under the rider seat which has a rated power output of 3300 Watts with a maximum power output of 5400 Watts. In the sport mode when the throttle is twisted, the 450 leaps to 40 kmph in just 3.9 seconds which is on par with regular petrol-powered scooters. And that’s amazing if you ask. The top speed of Ather 450 is 80 kmph which is more than enough for city riding as you would rarely hit 80 kmph during heavy and congested traffic conditions in any metro city in India.

Ather 450 - Best electric bike and scooter in India
Ather 450 is one of the best electric scooters in India with impressive style and features

There are three riding modes on offer – Eco, Ride, and Sport. All three modes have a different power curve, top speeds, and range. In the Eco mode, the top speed is limited to 50 kmph and will deliver you a range of 75 km per charge while in the Ride mode the 450 goes up to 60 kmph with range reducing to 65 km.

In the sport mode, the electronics inside the 450 will unleash all the power the motor is capable of producing for you to tame and reaches a maximum speed of 80 kmph. For the added performance in the sport mode, the range falls to a meager 55 km per charge.

The Ather 450 is eye-candy and a running style statement. The white colour it is available in is definitely an icing on the cake. The lithium-ion battery pack capacity is 2.4 kWh which returns a real-world range of 55 to 75 km per charge depending on the ride mode you are in. The battery takes around 5 hours to completely charge from a regular home socket.

Ather is working on installing Ather Grid public charging stations which will fast-charge the 450’s battery pack to 80% in just one hour. That clearly translates into about 60 km range in 60minutes. Quite amazing, right?

The instrument cluster is a unique 7-inch touch screen unit with full-colour support. It shows every possible detail you’d ever need from your scooter. There is a range indicator, leftover battery charge, Nearby Ather Grid along with Google Navigation. There are many connected features such as calls, messages, and data logging. The company promises of providing Over-The-Air updates free of cost even if you do not opt for connected services.

At present, the Ather 450 is available for purchase in Bangalore and Chennai with expansion planned in 11 major cities in the near future. The cities include Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, Delhi, Ahmedabad, etc.

Ather 450X

There was a time when Ather launched a cheaper 340 variant which had less power and less range. But surprisingly enough, the company had to discontinue it due to a lack of sales. The people were overwhelmed by the performance and practicality of the Ather 450 when compared to the 340 by paying a small cost.

So, what should be the next strategy? The Bangalore based start-up launched a sportier version of the Ather 450, and that’s 450X for you. The 450X has a slightly larger battery pack which increased the real-world range by 10 km to 85 km which is a welcome step.

Ather 450X - Best electric bike and scooter in India
Ather 450X is lighter and more powerful than the 450

Another thing to note is the 450X loses about 3 kg weight and tips the scale at 108 kg which is comparable to most 110cc petrol scooters. The motor power is bumped up to 6000 Watts from 5400 Watts in the regular 450. The torque output also increased to 26 Nm from 22 in the 450. Wen all these things are compiled together, the real-world performance seems to increase.

Now the 450X does the 0-40 kmph in just 3.3 seconds which is done by 0.7 seconds and the power delivery is sweetened. The top speed, however, remains the same at 80 kmph, maybe in the interest of a better range. The lithium-ion battery pack has more capacity of 2.7 kWh which explains the increase in the range.

The rest of the scooter is the same as that of 450 but 450X gets new colour options – Green and Black which makes it funkier and sportier.

Revolt RV400

Next on the list is one of our favourites, the Revolt RV400. It is the first mass-market electric Bike in India after the country has witnessed a plethora of electric scooters year after year. Revolt RV400 is powered by a 3-kW electric motor that is mounted in the mid-section of the motorcycle.

The power is sent to the rear wheel by a belt drive which helps in making the power transmission silent. The bike gets no gearbox apart from the single reduction via the belt drive. The next big thing in an electric bike is the power source, the battery. There is a large 3.24 kWh battery pack which allows you to travel anywhere between 80 km to 150 km in a full charge.

Revolt RV400 is pegged as India's first electric bike that came into production

Speaking about the top speed, the Revolt RV400 tops out at 85 kmph which is idle for Indian city conditions. There are three riding modes available – Eco, Normal, and Sports. In the Eco mode, the speed is limited to 45 kmph and the bike has the potential to deliver you a range of about 150 km.

Normal mode decreases the range to 100 km as top speed increases to 65 kmph. Sports mode is where the fun begins but range anxiety kicks-in. The top speed in Sports mode is 85 kmph and the range downs to about 80 km per charge.

An instrument cluster is a fully-digital unit with a whole lot of information available for the rider. You also get the Revolt mobile app through which you can connect to your electric bike and get the data and even order a fully charged battery if you run out of charge in the middle of nowhere.

The battery pack is removable and can be taken to your flat on the 14th floor to charge it. As a first in the segment feature, the Revolt RV400 offers dual disc brakes and USD forks at the front for sure footed riding dynamics.

Seat height is quite high at 814 mm for short riders but the ground clearance is pretty high at 215 mm. The lighting is a complete LED setup with a projector headlamp in the front. There is also an option to choose engine sounds for your revolt electric bike. This one is a bit quirky but fun.

Revolt RV300 is for those who need an electric bike with long-range

RV300 has the capability to deliver a range of up to 180 km in a single charge in the eco mode which sacrifices the fun part by reducing the top speed to just 25 kmph. Not a good deal but hey, look at the range.

Riding in the normal mode can deliver a range of 110 km with a limited top speed of 45 kmph. Still far better than 25 kmph. What say? Finally, the Sports mode will allow you to cruise at 65 kmph top speed for about 80 km before you need to recharge your battery pack.

The ground clearance of RV300 is impressive at 225 mm keeping the battery and the electricals safe during monsoon season. However, look out for that high seat height of 826 mm, making it unsuitable for short riders.

Revolt has its presence in six Indian cities as of now which includes – Delhi, Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Mumbai.

Bajaj once said that they will never make a scooter again. Why? Because their Krystal failed to sell in good numbers and the Pune based manufacturer’s sales registers were ringing due to the sales of Pulsars, Avengers, and other commuter motorcycles.

Come 2019, the company launched a scooter, well couldn’t the company keep its word. Yes, it did, by not launching any other petrol scooter. Chetak is electric.

Hero Electric is the only brand that is not providing LED lighting into its electric scooters which is a need of the hour.

The removable lithium-ion battery pack has a capacity of 2.7 kWh and can be charged at your home or office in about 4 hours. Final Words

So, these were the best electric bikes and scooter in India that are currently on sale. If you look at the electric vehicle market, it is only growing but at a very slow pace mostly due to a lack of good electric vehicles that ticks all the right boxes. In other words, this is just a trailer of what is about to come in this next decade.

More manufacturers are working behind the scenes on the electric vehicle projects and are expected to launch more electric vehicles in the years to come. Speaking of the product and the features, we feel Ather is the best at what they are doing because the 450 electric scooter is at present, the best electric scooter currently on sale.

The only limiting factor when it comes to sales of electric bikes and scooters in India is the high price of electric scooters, unavailability of public charging infrastructure, not enough practical range, and sub-par performance when compared to their petrol-powered counterparts.

For example, when you consider Ather 450 with TVS Ntorq, the latter has far better performance and is capable of running 200 km in a tank-full of petrol which can be refilled in just 5 minutes on any petrol station.

On the other hand, Ather 450 has a max range of 75 km in eco mode with a restricted top speed of 50 kmph. If Ather is enjoyed at 80 kmph the range drastically drops to 55 km in a full charge. The battery takes about 5 hours of recharge or 1.5 hrs of fast charging before going anywhere else.

On the price front, the Ather 450 cost about Rs 35,000 more than the Ntorq 125, and 450X is nearly double the price. Electric bikes and scooters are still a long way from becoming the first pick among the masses which is expected to happen in the coming years.
