This segment of bikes is now treated as premium machines because of the new price spectrum. Previously, a 150cc bike’s on-road price was under Rs 1 lakh which is now changed and now even the ex-showroom price is over Rs 1 lakh. These changes cam with the mandatory ABS and BS6 emission norms.

In this segment, you will find bikes from multitude categories including sports commuter, naked streetfighter, cruiser, electric bikes as well as sports bikes. The choice is unending, but you can easily decide which one can be best for you by deciding on a particular budget range, the type of bike you want, riding requirements such as daily rides, occasional rides, highway touring etc.

A number of manufacturers are developing new bikes which will be launched under Rs 1.5 lakh in India in the near future. This will further increase the confusion of buyers and competition in the segment. We have presented 27 best bikes under 1.5 lakh in a bid to include most successful bikes, bikes from nearly all the categories as well as the best contender bikes in the segment after the most popular one.

Check out the list of bikes between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.5 lakh in India that you can purchase in 2020-21. All the bikes mentioned here are arranged in an ascending order to minimise the confusion with the readers.

Hero Xtreme 160R

Let’s start this list with the Hero’s most popular 150cc bike, the Xtreme 160R. After the discontinuation of old Xtreme 150, the 160cc avatar of the Xtreme has shaken the segment with its mean presence and explosive performance. Not only it is a sports naked bike, it can be very well used as a commuter motorcycle for daily riding needs.

It comes loaded with LED headlight and taillights with fully digital negative LCD instrument console offering most of the information to the rider with gear position indicator. There are disc brakes on both ends with a single-channel ABS for safer braking and also to keep the cost in check at the same time.

It is powered by a newly developed 163cc, single-cylinder engine from Hero but continues to use a 2-valve head. IT generates 15 bhp at 8500 rpm and a peak torque of 14 Nm at 6500 rpm. These numbers are good for daily fun riding and also provides respectable mileage of 45 to 50 km per litre depending on the behaviour of the rider.

Speaking about the performance, the 139 kg bike is not as good performer as the Apache RTR 160 4V but offers a great rival to the bike. It does attain a top speed in the region of 110 kmph due to shorter gearing but the acceleration is impressive especially for the city conditions.

Hero Xtreme 160R can be your first bike if you are ready to enter the 150-160cc segment. It is also a light and nimble to move around in the city limits due to well-sorted frame and light kerb weight.

Yamaha FZ S FI

Moving on to the next bike in the list, we have Yamaha FZ S FI which is the first bike from the Yamaha brand in India. Before BS6, there were 110, 125 and 150 cc commuter bikes but they all have been discontinued due to low sales. The FZS FI is a great city bike form the Japanese brand and comes with well-calibrated suspension for riding over the bad patches of roads without any hassle.

The design is sober and mature which won’t get old in the coming years which is also a great point while purchasing the bike. Speaking about the engine, the bike gets a 149cc, single-cylinder unit with electronic fuel injection system and 2-valve SOHC head. It makes 12.2 bhp at 7250 rpm and 13.6 Nm at 5500 rpm which is the lest in any 150cc bike you can spot on Indian roads. A 5-speed gearbox does the reduction duties.

Coming to the performance, the bike attains 60 kmph with ease but post that, the acceleration nearly dies out due to low power. Yamaha FSZ FI is only good for those who are looking for a slightly more powerful than 125cc bike but which also offers good fuel efficiency of more than 47 kmpl in the city riding scenarios.

You get a fully digital instrument cluster and a variant also equipped with Bluetooth connectivity feature for a small premium. The bike gets a flat and comfortable seat for long city commutes and the rider’s triangle is supportive for the rider’s body.

Aprilia SR 160

Up next, we have Aprilia SR 150 which is a sports scooter made to tackle the city roads in a combination with easy to ride mechanism of the CVT transmission. The performance from an SR 160 cannot be beaten by any other scooter in the segment but the practicality is. It is least practical scooter in the country but the performance is so good that many 150cc bikes shy away from it.

At the heart of Aprilia SR 160 is a new 160.03cc single-cylinder, air-cooled engine. This fuel-injected and 3-valve head unit churn out a max power of 10.84 bhp at 7600 rpm and 11.6 Nm at 6000 rpm. The performance is a bit low when compared to the BS4 version of the scooter as whole power and torque curve has been affected due to retuning of the engine.

The scooter accelerated to 60 kmph in about 7 seconds and goes up to a top speed of 100 kmph which is impressive for a scooter with a CVT transmission. However, the high-performance results in lower fuel economy and the SR 160 returns about 40 kmpl in the city riding conditions which is just fine for the performance that is being offered by the scooter.

You will only get a semi-digital instrument cluster without any kind of Bluetooth connectivity or any other flashy feature. For Rs 1.05 lakh ex-showroom, New Delhi, you will get the scooter and great performance.
