There are numerous electric bikes and scooters available in the country which are priced from as low as Rs 35,000 and goes over Rs 3 lakh mark. However, we will not be talking about the extremes here but only those that can be best used for daily commuting within the city. Due to the lack of public fast-charging infrastructure along the highways and the expressways, it is not possible to take electric bikes and scooters out for highway touring.

Electric bikes ask for a premium in the initial purchase cost while the running cost is negligible to that of bikes powered by petrol engines. This difference in the running cost balances the finances and within a few years the electric vehicle turns out to be the cheaper alternative to fossil fuel vehicles in the long run.

An electric bike has many advantages over the petrol-powered bikes and they are – easy to ride, low running cost, can be charged at home, the adequate range for city commutes, cheap and easy to maintain, most electric bikes are stylish enough to flaunt, are practical and offers sufficient performance in the city limits.

Check out the new electric bikes that are great for daily city commutes with a fraction of running cost.

Hero Electric Photon

Let’s start this list of new electric bikes in India with Hero Electric Photon. It is a pretty basic electric scooter form India’s largest electric two-wheeler manufacturer. The Photon is priced at nearly Rs 62,000 ex-showroom, New Delhi making it an affordable choice for people who want an electric scooter for daily riding.

Hero Photon

Hero Electric Photon is powered by a hub-mounted BLDC motor that is rated at 1500 Watts of max power with 1000 Watts of continuous power. The difference between continuous power and max power is that with continuous power, the scooter runs at a constant speed below the top speed while max power of the motor is required for overtakes and reaching the top speed of 45 kmph.

For some, 45 kmph might look slow but is at an adequate speed for city riding and commuting between home and the office.

It comes installed with a lithium-ion battery pack that sends electric power to the motor. This battery pack holds 1.344 kWh of charge that can let you ride the scooter for about 80 km in a single charge. It takes around 4 to 5 hours of charging from a home power socket to fully charge the battery.

Coming to the rider convenience, the Photon comes with a USB charging port for charging the phone while on the run, remote locking with an anti-theft alarm, large footboard, hooks and a glove box for placing small items securely.

One thing that doesn’t go with today’s time in the basic analogue instrument panel with just a speedometer, odometer and analogue battery level indicator. For increasing the sales and dealer footfalls, the company should add more features like a fully digital instrument cluster with Bluetooth connectivity and modern-day features.

There are telescopic forks at the front and twin shock absorbers at the rear offering a balanced ride for the city roads. The wheels are on the smaller side at 10-inch steel rims at both the front and the rear that are fine for an affordable electric scooter for the masses.

The braking department is taken care of by disc brake at the front and drum brake at the rear for optimum braking performance. There is a combined braking system available for safer braking performance.

Hero Electric Dash

The next electric scooter on this list is the Hero Electric Dash. It is a stylish scooter from the company and looks funky as well. Unlike the Photon, the Dash is a slow speed electric scooter that can be ridden without getting registered at the road transport office.

Hero Electric Dash

The top speed of the Hero Dash is just 25 kmph which exempt it from getting registered at the RTO. It is a lightweight electric scooter with a kerb weight of just 69 kg. Anyone from school students to senior citizens can easily ride it without worrying about managing the weight in the city traffic.

Hero Dash is propelled by a 250-Watt BLDC hub-mounted electric motor which takes the scooter to a top speed of 25 kmph. A 1.34 kWh lithium-ion battery pack supplies the motor with electricity offering a range of about 60 km in a single charge. It takes around 4 to 5 hours to completely charge the lithium-ion battery pack which is adequate and daily running. Just charge the scooter overnight and use it in the day.

The best part of the Hero Dash is that it comes with a fully digital instrument panel delivering all the important information to the rider. The front apron holds the headlight which makes it look sporty and you get a black finished head with aluminium finished brakes levers for enhanced appeal.

Being a slow speed scooter, the company has only provided drum brakes at both the front and the rear which offers adequate braking power to stop the scooter. A pair of telescopic forks are present at the front end and shock absorbers do the job at the rear offering a good ride quality. You get larger 13-inch alloy wheels at both ends with tubeless tyres.

Techo Electra Emerge

Up next, we have Techo Electra Emerge electric scooter from an Indian electric vehicle manufacturer. It is a compact and funky electric scooter for daily commuting and is priced under Rs 68,000 ex-showroom, New Delhi making it an affordable and stylish electric scooter.

Techno Electra Emerge

For the audience to choose, the company is offering the Emerge in three bright colours – Red, Yellow and Black. A couple of more trendy colours would do the job by providing more flexible choices to the customers looking for an electric scooter. The Emerge looks sturdy with its retro shaped LED headlight on the front apron.

Powering the Techo Electra Emerge is a hub-mounted BLDC electric motor that generates a peak power of 250 Watts. With a lithium-ion power supply unit of 1.8 kWh, the scooter can go up to 25 kmph top speed and an amazing range of 100 km per charge can be achieved with this setup. It is a welcome step from the scooter that is offering a long-range making it practical and feasible for rides in the metro cities.

The 1.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack can be charged from zero to 100% in about 4 hours which is a great time for charging that offers long-range. The topmost reason for its long-range is the limited speed of just 25 kmph. Had the company offered a powerful motor, the price of the scooter would have shot up rendering it less practical and also the range would drop.

The Emerge comes fitted with telescopic forks at the front and shock absorbers at the rear giving out a well laid out suspension setup for comfortable commuting. There is a front disc brake and rear drum brake setup on the Emerge which is overdone looking at the low top speed of the scooter. It gets small 10-inch cast alloy wheels which do look smart but should have been larger 12-inch units for better ride quality.

Techo Electra Emerge is a good bet for someone looking for a new breed of electric scooters for regular riding without burning a hole in your pocket.

Ampere Zeal

Ampere Zeal is one such electric scooter that offers the best of all. The design is respectable and smart and has tins of funkiness, there is more than adequate range from the motor and battery setup. Not only this, the Zeal offers a top speed of about 55 kmph that is sufficient for commuting in the city traffic without getting bored.

Ampere Zeal

Ampere Zeal gets a hub-mounted BLDC motor that churns out 1200 Watts of power that’s nearly 5 times that of slow-speed scooters. You get a respectable 1.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that can hold enough charge to run about 70 to 75 km from a single full charge. The top speed that you will get for the Zeal is about 55 kmph but you can ride it at a lower speed for maximum battery range. The lithium-ion battery pack can be charged in about 4 to 5 hours of charging from the available home power socket.

Apart from just battery and power talk, another important thing to notice is that Ampere Zeal gets a removable battery pack that allows a rider to remove the battery can take it up to their homes or office for charging.

On the dashboard, there is a fully digital instrument cluster with most of the information available to the rider. There are two-speed modes that help in extracting maximum range and maximum power. The eco mode reduces the top speed of the scooter thereby delivering more kilometres per charge while the other mode unleashes the full potential of the scooter.

Somewhere you can find disc brakes on the scooters which have top speeds of just 25 kmph and here, the Zeal can climb up to 55 kmph on full throttle, there is no disc brakes on offer. At both ends; all you get is a pair of drum brakes for stopping the Zeal.

A pair of front telescopic forks do the job at the front and twin shock absorbers with a hydraulic damper is present at the rear. This setup offers adequate bump absorption in the city limits. There are 10-inch wheels at both ends of the scooter which comes with tubeless tyres for convenience.

Joy E-Bike Glob

Joy E-Bike Glob is yet another funky and stylish electric scooter from an Indian manufacturer. It is priced at a Rs 69750 ex-showroom, New Delhi. An electric scooter is a great way of riding through the city traffic as they are easy on the pocket and also easy to ride with less way and a single-speed drive. Glob is available in four colour options – Rose Gold, Blue, Silver and Black.

Joy Ebike Glob

At the core of the Joy E-bike Glob is a hub-mounted electric motor with a peak power rating of 250 Watts. This motor is supplied electricity by a 1.38 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that promises a range of about 60 km from a single full charge. This range is sufficient for teenage riders who need to travel to coaching centres or senior citizens travelling for groceries or to the nearest park for their evening walk.

This battery pack can be charged in just 3.5 hours from a regular home socket making it quite practical and one can also charge the battery in the day time for a quick top-up. The company offers a 6-ampere charger with the scooter which is a welcome step.

If you get the Glob, you will be greeted with a fully digital instrument cluster delivering the info of all the basic and necessary details about the scooter and the battery level. The Glob is expensive and the reason behind this is the presence of disc brakes at both ends which is pretty useless for this scooter. Drum brakes would have sufficed for optimum braking performance. With a kerb weight of just 67 kg, the Joy E-Bike Glob is pretty light in weight and can be used by anyone.

There are 10-inch wheels at both ends which are connected through a pair of telescopic forks at the front and twin shock absorbers at the rear offering a comfortable ride quality on city roads.

Pure EV EPluto

Up next, we have the Pure EV’s EPluto electric scooter which is a slow-speed machine designed to be used by young the old as it is a slow-speed bike for daily commuting. However, it is among the most expensive electric scooter with an entry-level powertrain. The design is what commands the price as it is a retro-styled electric scooter that is easy to ride and counter the rising fuel prices.

Epluto Electric Scooter

Priced at Rs 72,387 ex-showroom, New Delhi, the scooter gets a lithium-ion battery pack and light-weight chassis.

A hub-mounted BLDC electric motor with a power rating of 250 Watts moves the EPluto to a top speed of 25 kmph. The riding range of around 80 km from a single charge is provided by a large 1.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Being the advanced battery technology, it takes just 4 to 5 hours of charging from zero to 100% which is far less than the lead-acid counterpart of the previous models.

The acceleration is smooth and takes its own time to reach the top speed of 25 kmph. You get a fully digital instrument cluster offering a range of data to the rider and gets a full LED headlight unit for proper night time road illumination. Also, the visual appeal of the scooter is at best with these features.

Another feature that EPluto comes with is the regenerative braking that charges the battery while brakes are applied and the scooter comes to a rolling stop. Down the hills and the flyovers, you can cost the scooter and recharge the battery for more range. However, this is possible only in the city rides as there are more instances where you need to apply brakes and the battery can be charged.

The suspension system is comprised of telescopic forks up front and shock absorbers do the job at the rear. There are 10-inch black alloy wheels are present at both ends offering a good style element.

The expensive price tag on the EPluto can be avoided by the company by offering drum brakes at both ends. At present, you will get disc brake units at both the front and the rear offering good stopping power. As we have already mentioned earlier, there is absolutely no need to offer disc brakes on an electric scooter with a top speed of just 25 kmph.

Benling Aura

Benling Aura is an electric scooter from the stable of Benling India and it a perfect blend of style, performance and practicality that is on offer in the Indian market. It is a high-speed electric scooter that is targeted at mature riders as well as young riders who love the design language of classic scooters. It is priced at Rs 93,200 ex-showroom, New Delhi which is pretty reasonable for what you get with this machine.

Benling Aura

Speaking about the powertrain, the Benling Aura gets a hub-mounted electric motor with a maximum power output of 2500 Watts or 3.35 bhp. The continuous power output is not specified by the company and we expect it to be around 1200-1500 Watts. It offers good city performance and the top speed is pegged at 60 to 65 kmph.

A battery pack is a lithium-ion unit with a total charge capacity of 2.88 kWh which is the highest in this price range. This large battery ensures a riding range of nearly 140 km in the eco mode which is pretty decent for practical city riding.

One amazing thing with the Benling Aura is the faster charging battery. It takes about 3.5 hours to completely charge the 2.88 kWh battery pack which means you can charge the battery pack to usage percentage in a couple of hours. You can also detach the battery pack to take it to your comfort places like home or office to charge it.

There are four riding modes available on the Benling Aura that can be switched with the help of a button on the switchgear. A real-world range of anywhere 60 to 70 km will be easily achievable by most riders. The instrument cluster is a fully digital unit with numbers showcased in different colours that are easy to read.

There is a safety feature called parking mode which prevents the rider from accidentally moving forward. To ride again you have to press the parking button. Another safety feature is that if the side stand is down, the Aura goes into parking mode and does not move forward until the side stand is lifted up. These safety features are important for an electric scooter with immense torque output. Once you stop at the traffic signal, the smart system puts the scooter into parking mode to ensure the safety of the rider.

Speaking about the ride modes, there are four ride modes on the Aura with the first being the eco mode. In the eco mode, the Aura is restricted to a top speed of 30 kmph that ensures an extended range of 100 km to 140 km. The second, third and fourth modes have top speeds of 43 kmph, 55 kmph and 65 kmph. With a load of a pillion, the top speed in the 4th mode is reduced to about 60 kmph which is still pretty decent for this electric scooter.

For rider convenience, there is a glove box at the front with a mobile charging USB port. The under-seat storage is quite less due to the battery pack which sits under the seat but there is still enough space to keep your documents safe under the seat.

At the front, there is a pair of telescopic forks and twin-shock absorbers are present at the rear with hydraulic dampers and coil springs. This setup offers a decent ride quality even on the bad patches of roads. Large 12-inch alloy rims are present at the front and the rear with tubeless tyres that further enhances the riding experience.

To make the scooter stop in its path, there is a disc brake unit at the front end while a drum brake is placed at the rear wheel. This braking system is optimum for safer braking. The kerb weight of Aura is just 95 kg which is still lighter than most of the petrol-powered scooters in the Indian market.

At last, we would like to state that Benling Aura is a great machine and can become your first electric vehicle for daily rides as it is priced under Rs 1 lakh and offers decent performance as well as riding range.

SVM Prana

At last, we have the SVM Prana on this list which is among the most expensive and on sale in the country. The design of the SVM Prana is inspired by the Kawasaki Z900 premium streetfighter motorcycle which costs nearly Rs 10 lakh on the road. On the other hand, the Prana is priced at just Rs 2.25 lakh ex-showroom.

SVM Prana

For the first customers, the company is offering a green discount of Rs 25,000 on the Prana. However, there is a catch for that discount. All you have to do is plant 10 trees and send the proof to the company and you get the discount of Rs 25,000 making the ex-showroom price fall down to Rs 2 lakh. This is a great step taken by the company to drive more tree plantation for better air.

At the heart of the SVM Prana is a 4.32 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that sends power to the hub-mounted BLDC motor. The motor churns out a maximum power of 4 kW that is 5.36 bhp and 38 Nm of torque which his greater than the Dominar 400. With this combination of electric motor and battery, you can achieve a top speed of 123 kmph on the electric bike which is a great deal for an electric bike.

Coming to the range, the bike offers a range of 126 km which is more than sufficient for daily city rides. Charging the battery through a 15A home socket takes about 4 hours and 15 minutes. But if you are in a hurry and need to juice up the battery faster, the company is offering a fast-charging capability that can charge the battery to 100% under 2 hours. The company claims that fast charging reduces the charge cycles of the battery and reduces its life.

Prana comes with four ride modes – Practice, Drive, Sport and Reverse. The practice mode restricts the top speed to just 45 kmph which is good for new riders who do not understand the proper usability of the bike. The drive mode keeps the top speed to 123 kmph but the acceleration is smooth and safe. In the Sport mode, the acceleration becomes sporty and the top speed is the same at 123 kmph. The reverse mode helps to reverse the bike and has a top speed of less than 5 kmph.

SVM Prana also offers an Elite variant with larger battery pack of 7.2 kWh and it will go on sale next year in 2022. The Elite variant will be priced at Rs 3 lakh ex-showroom, India.
