TVS Jupiter 125 vs Honda Activa 125: Engine and Performance

Coming to the powertrain section, both the scooters are powered with 125cc engine which are tuned to deliver best low and mid-range performance and highest possible fuel efficiency.

Starting with the Jupiter 125, the new commuter scooter is equipped with an air-cooled, single-cylinder, fuel-injected, 2-valve SOHC, four-stroke engine that displaces 124.8cc. This powerplant is able to make 8.04 bhp of maximum power at 6500 rpm and 10.5 Nm torque at 4500 rpm. The power figure might not look so great and imposing, but 10.5 Nm torque is the highest torque available on any 125cc commuter scooter.

With peak twisting force available at just 4500 rpm, the initial acceleration offered by the Jupiter 125 will be far stronger than any other commuter scooter in the 125cc segment. There is a CVT transmission which sends power to the rear wheel via a centrifugal clutch. On the Jupiter 110, the CVT gearbox is tuned to offer good acceleration and delivers respectable fuel economy.

The Activa 125 from Honda is propelled by a 124cc, single-cylinder, fuel-injected, 2-valve, air-cooled 2-vavel engine. This motor develops max power of 8.18 bhp at 6500 rpm and 10.3 Nm twisting force at 5000 rpm. A CVT gearbox sends power to the rear wheel via a centrifugal clutch. Coming to the power to weight ratio, the Jupiter manages to score a point where with a slightly more power to weight ratio of 74.44 bhp per ton whereas the Honda Activa 125 offers 73.69 bhp per ton. This is made possible by lower kerb weight of 108 kg versus 111 kg of the Activa. At 97.22 Nm per ton, the torque to weight ratio of the Jupiter is far superior to Honda’s 92.8 Nm per ton. This will translate into better initial acceleration and better roll-on acceleration.

With 2-valves per head, both the scooters have similar engine technology with electronic fuel injection system. TVS offers eco-thrust fuel injection system while Activa 125 gets PGM-FI fuel injection technology. Both these EFI systems are tuned to offer best-in-class fuel efficiency to cater to the daily commuters.

The mileage that you can expect from a 125cc commuter scooter is around 45 kmpl to 50 kmpl in the real-world riding scenarios. However, the fuel economy is completely dependent on the way you handle the throttle. If the throttle is opened too wide, frequently and in most occasions, the mileage will drop and if acceleration and deceleration are controlled, the mileage that you get is far better.

The Jupiter 125 is expected to give around 50 kmpl in mixed riding conditions were ridden at economy speed range. It comes with a floor-board mounted 5-litre fuel tank, which can let you ride for around 250 km in a single tankful. Honda Activa 125, on the other hand easily delivers 45 to 48 kmpl and with a 5.3-litre tank, the average range is pegged at 250 km as well. Here, both the contenders are equally matched.

TVS Jupiter 125 vs Honda Activa 125: Chassis, Suspension and Tyres

Moving further to the chassis and suspension department, the scooters that you find on the Indian roads are all built around steel-tubular chassis which runs from front to the ends offering adequate level of structural rigidity and riding dynamics are rider-friendly.

The Jupiter 125 is a commuter scooter from the house of TVS and it is a well-known fact that TVS bikes and scooters has a touch of racing dynamics and it is well-aware on the new Jupiter 125. The main reason for that is the placement of the fuel tank which is under the floor-board and lowers the centre of gravity.

A lower centre of gravity ensures the quick lane changing movements and also keep the scooter balanced at all speeds. Riding through the bad patches of roads is also less strenuous on the rider the pillion due to lower-set fuel tank.

Coming to the suspension, the Jupiter 125 comes fitted with telescopic forks at the front and a single spring-loaded, shock absorber with hydraulic damper is present at the rear with MIG gas canister for better ride quality and bump absorption. With larger 12-inch wheels on both ends and 90/90 section tubeless tyres helps in keeping the scooter stable on the broken stretches of roads. The adjustable rear suspension comes handy for pre-load adjustment. This setup on the Jupiter is well-balanced and would offer stable city performance in the city speeds.

The braking department on the Jupiter 125 is taken care of by 220 mm front disc brake and a rear drum brake on the top variant. It gets combined braking system with additional master cylinder connected to the rear brake lever for applying the front brake with rear brake lever. The two lower variants of the Jupiter 125 comes with front drum brake for keeping the price of the scooter on the lower side and also to provide more options to the customers.

Honda Activa 125 continues to ride on the 12-inch front wheel and 10-inch rear wheel. This different wheel sizes do not offer spirited riding dynamics. The scooter tends to jolt the riders on bad patches of roads because of different level of feedback received due to different wheel sizes. Activa’s front-end is handled by telescopic forks while it comes with a single spring-loaded shock absorber with hydraulic damper at the rear. The Activa is known for its satisfactory ride and handling characteristics which is well accepted by the masses.

Honda Activa is brought to a halt by drum brae on both ends in the lower variants with combined braking system keeping the rider safe with its shorter braking distance and better stability. The top variant of the Activa 125 comes with front disc brake unit which further increases the braking power and aids in bringing the scooter to a complete halt by covering far shorter distance.

Out of the two, it is the Jupiter 125 which comes with a lower seat height of 765 mm which will allow the riders with shorter height to easily mount of the machine and manage in the tight city traffic conditions. Activa 125 isn’t far high but at just 5 mm more at 770 mm. Even this is fairly lower for most riders out there.

The ground clearance of the Activa 125 is slightly more than the Jupiter 125 at 169 mm while the Jupiter gets only 163 mm. However, looking from a distance, the ground clearance of over 160 mm is sufficient for Indian city roads which are filled with speed-breakers.

City manoeuvring is an aspect which is attributed by the wheelbase of a scooter. With longer wheelbase, you get better high-speed stability and straight-line performance is sturdy and safe. However, it also brings to the table, the larger turning circle radius. Here, the Jupiter 125 gets 1275 mm wheelbase which is great for more space in the commuting machine. The Activa 125, on the other hand, gets 1260 mm wheelbase which is on the lower side aiding the riders to manoeuvre in the city pretty easily.

TVS Jupiter 125 vs Honda Activa 125: Features

After going through all the specifications of the scooters, here we come at the features department. Without wasting time, we would say that Jupiter is no-doubt, a more feature-rich scooter and as per the company records, more features could come with special edition of higher variants of the scooter in the future.

For starters, the TVS Jupiter 125 gets a sober deign with chrome elements at the right places that enhances the visual appeal of the commuter scooter. There is a semi-digital instrument cluster that offers analogue speedometer and an LCD screen for info like odometer, trip meters, average fuel efficiency, instantaneous fuel efficiency, fuel gauge and much more. At present, there is no Bluetooth connectivity feature available on the Jupiter 125 but we expect the company to offer the same in the near future.

The seat on the new Jupiter is longest in the segment with 790 mm length with enough width and good level of padding for providing comfort to the rider and the pillion. Two full size adults can easily accommodate on the seat. There is 32-litre under-seat storage in the Jupiter which is highest in the segment and is made possible by shifting the fuel tank forward under the floor board. The mid and the top variant comes fitted with machine cut allow wheels which carries best design in this commuter scooter segment.

You get boot lamp, front glove storage space and USB mobile charging socket. There is a parking lever available on the rear brake lever which comes handy for parking the scooter on inclines and in public parking spots. LED headlight cluster with LED DRLs are available on all the variants of the Jupiter. The tail-light and turn indicators are halogen units to keep the cost in check.

Coming to the Honda Activa 125, the coaster is a premium commuter machine in Honda’s India line-up of vehicles as Activa 6G is the base commuter scooter. It comes with semi-digital instruments cluster from the base variant itself but the LED headlight cluster and disc brake are available only on the top deluxe variant. The meter console of the Activa 125 gets analogue speedometer and LCD screen for rest of the information. It gets instant fuel economy, average fuel consumption and range readouts like Jupiter for keeping eye on the mileage and distance to empty while on the run.

The Activa also carries elements of chrome on the front end which makes it look different than the Activa 6G. Overall style is also a tad different to attract more customers to the 125cc version of the Activa brand. IT is also a perfect scooter for two adults with long and wide seat which is also padded with good quality foam. The boot space of the Activa is far lower than the Jupiter at around 20 litres of space. There is no USB charging available on the Activa and no front storage space is present either.

In Conclusion

Honda Activa 125 is an established scooter while the Jupiter is a well-known brand int eh scooter market. However, nothing can be said before the deliveries of the Jupiter 125 starts and achieves a regular sales figure on a monthly basis. We expect that with TVS’ expertise in developing exceptional products, the people will accept the new bigger and improved Jupiter with open hearts.

TVS Jupiter is offering class-leading under-seat storage, better riding dynamics, LED headlight and host of features which are segment first and highly convenient for the riders. There is no doubt that Honda is known for its reliability and built quality and now gets tough competition from the Indian manufacturer.

If you only want to go with the trusted scooter in the commuter segment, then Honda Activa 125 will be the choice to go with. However, if you require exclusive features and practicality offered by the new Jupiter 125, then no other scooter can satisfy your needs of space and technology other than the Jupiter 125.
