TVS took the charge and developed its best commuter machine in the form of Jupiter 125.

TVS Jupiter 125 will go against the likes of Suzuki Access 125, Honda Activa 125, Yamaha Fascino 125 and Hero Destini 125. All these scooters are targeted at the specific customer types which hails from middle class families and scattered across tier 1, tier 2 and tier 3 cities of the country. These machines offer better performance and pickup in the traffic-clad city roads but do not compromise on the fuel efficiency because the fuel efficiency figure is almost similar to the 110cc scooters in the market.

TVS Jupiter 125 vs Rivals: Variants and Price

The all-new TVS Jupiter 125 is launched at a highly attractive price tag of Rs 73,400 which is ideally priced considering the number of useful equipment and segment-first features it comes loaded with. Jupiter comes in three variants – Steel Wheels, Alloy Wheels and Disc brake. The starting price we have mentioned is for the Jupiter 125 with steel wheels. The alloy wheels variant will set you back by Rs 76,800. Top-of-the-line disc brake equipped Jupiter 125 has been priced at Rs 81,300. All these prices are ex-showroom New Delhi.

The chief rival to the new Jupiter is the established commuting machine, the Suzuki Access 125. The alloy wheel variant asks for Rs 75,100, the special edition Access 125 with front drum brake cost Rs 76,800, the disc brake equipped Access 125 demands Rs 77,100 while the Special Edition of the Disc brake scooter gets a price tag of Rs 78,800. Suzuki Access 125₹ 73,400
Honda Activa 125₹ 73,203
Yamaha Fascino 125₹ 72,500
Hero Destini 125₹ 69,500

After this, we have Honda Activa 125, the price of which starts from Rs 73,203 ex-showroom for the base variant with steel wheels. To get the alloy wheels on the Honda Activa 125, you will have to shell out 76,771 and the front disc brake variant will demand Rs 80,325 ex-showroom, New Delhi.

Yamaha recently launched the Hybrid version of the Fascino premium commuter scooter in India with price starting from Rs 72,500 ex-showroom New Delhi. There is another variant which is more feature rich and gets front disc brake and full LED headlight setup has been priced at Rs 78,530 ex-showroom New Delhi.

Finally, the last contender against the Jupiter 125 is the Hero Destini 125 which is the most affordable and basic commuter scooter in this comparison. Hero Destini 125 is priced from Rs 69,500 for the LX variant, Rs 72,950 for the VX variant and Rs 74,750 for the 100-million edition. All these prices are ex-showroom New Delhi.

We can say that Suzuki Access125 has the greatest number of variants and the highest price also belongs to the Access 125. The Destini 125 from Hero is the most affordable 125cc scooter you can buy but it is also the simplest looking scooter as well. Let’s go into the engine and performance section of the 125cc scooters.

TVS Jupiter 125 vs Rivals: Engine and Performance

TVS Jupiter 125 is powered by a reworked 124.8cc, air-cooled, fuel-injected, single-cylinder, 2-valve engine which shares some parts with eh Ntorq 125 but is a completely new mill especially made for the Jupiter. This motor belts out modest 8.04 bhp of power at 6500 rpm and healthy 10.5 Nm torque at 4500 rpm. You can notice in the table below; the Jupiter’s engine delivers higher amount of torque at least engine rpm range. This easily translates to impressive initial acceleration that will help you measure the city traffic with ease.

This engine is mated to an automatic CVT type gearbox which is tuned to deliver highest mileage possible. The 3-valve engine from Ntorq 125 has been changed to 2-valve unit on the Jupiter to keep the cost low. Company claims that all-new Jupiter 125 offers best-in-class acceleration and roll-on acceleration when compared to the rivals.

The Access 125 gets a 1245cc, air-cooled, fuel-injected, single-cylinder, 2-valve engine which is designed to output slightly more power than Jupiter at 8.6 bhp at 6750 rpm but lower 10 Nm torque at 5500 rpm. A CVT transmission is connected to the engine which sends power to the rear wheel. In the commuter segment, the Access 125 is the quickest scooter to 60 kmph as it touches the speed in just 7.5 seconds.

India’s most popular scooter brand, Activa is propelled by a 124cc, air-cooled, fuel-injected, single-cylinder, 2-valve engine. This engine churns out 8.18 bhp of power at 6500 rpm and 10.3 Nm twisting force at 5000 rpm. The power to the rear wheel is transferred by a CVT gearbox and drives the rear wheel. This engine is the most reliable unit among all the 125cc scooters on sale in India and due to this, the sales are higher than other 125cc scooters in the market.

All new Yamaha Fascino Hybrid now gets starter motor generator system offering additional torque during initial acceleration taking the total torque output to 10.3 Nm at 5000 rpm. This air-cooled, single-cylinder, four-stroke, fuel-injected, 2-valve engine is able to develop max power of 8.04 bhp at 6500 rpm. This is the only scooter in this comparison that offers similar power figure to that of the Jupiter 125. However, the torque is on the lower side when compared to the Jupiter 125.

The most powerful scooter in this specification comparo is the Hero Destini 125. It comes fitted with a Hero-developed 124.6cc, single-cylinder, fuel-injected engine with 2-valve head for breathing. This mill belts out 9 bhp of power at 7000 rpm and 10.4 Nm torque at 5500 rpm. The twisting force developed by Destini’s engine is only second to the Jupiter 125’s 10.5 Nm which is the highest in this comparison. The Destini is also driven by an Automatic CVT transmission system which drives the rear wheel via centrifugal clutch.

Honda Activa 125 has the least power to weight ratio of 73.69 bhp per ton while with 82.69 bhp per ton, the Access 125 leads the race. Jupiter, due to its lower power output, the power to weight ratio stands at 74.44 bhp per ton which is only better than Activa.

However, coming to the torque to weight ratio, Jupiter 125 offers 97.22 Nm per ton which is only second to Fascino’s 104 Nm per ton. The best-selling Suzuki Access 125 settles with 96.15 Nm per ton which is also in the good ballpark. Hero Destini 125 would offer you the least torque to weight ratio of just 91 Nm per ton leading to lower initial acceleration.

Coming to the fuel efficiency, all these scooters are targeted at the family-oriented customers looking for 125cc scooter with highest of the mileage possible from the fuel-injected BS6 engine. Here, almost al the new 125cc scooter with fuel-injected engine offers great mileage for daily usage. The Access 125 can easily return over 50 kmpl of mileage in the real-world riding conditions and with a 5-litre fuel tank capacity, the riding range one can get is around 250 km.

Since TVS Jupiter 110 offers class-leasing mileage figure for its segment, we expect the new Jupiter 125 also offers similar mileage figures. At the end, if all depends on how a rider uses the throttle to propel the scooter through the city streets for best fuel efficiency. Hero Destini 125, with the Xsens technology and programmed fuel injection system can offer mileage of over 45 kmpl on an average day through city.

Honda Activa 125 is able to deliver 45 to 48 kmpl if ridden with a light wrist which when combined with a tank capacity of 5.3 litres, the range goes up to 254 km from a single tankful. Yamaha Fascino due to its light-weight design and hybrid powertrain, can provide a mileage of 55 kmpl which is among the highest in the 125cc segment. It gets a 5.2-litre tank capacity offering a range of around 280 km.

TVS Jupiter 125 vs Rivals: Chassis, Suspension and Tyres

Coming to the chassis section of the 125cc scooter comparison. All these scooters in the comparo are built around steel tubular chassis with body parts attached over it. You get to see a combination of plastic and metal bodies panels on the scooters in this segment.

All-new TVS Jupiter 125 comes with stylish and sturdy metal body panels which are strong and offer better rider safety. Despite metal parts, the Jupiter 125 is lighter than the Honda Activa 125 and the Hero Destini 125. Both Activa and Destini features robust metal body parts which feels stronger to own and lasts for years.

The Jupiter’s chassis has been modified to accommodate the 5.1-litre fuel tank under the foot-board well secured between the tubular structure and reinforced underbelly. It gets a metal fuel tank which is robust in itself and is well protected from all sides. With the weight of the fuel tank and the fuel shifted to the lower part of the scooter, the centre of gravity is further lowered and this aids in handling characteristics of the scooter.

TVS Jupiter 125 comes fitted with 12-inch wheels at both ends with 90/90 section tyres. It is the only scooter to have the rear 12-inch wheel while rest of the 125cc scooters only get front 12-inch wheel while the rear wheel remains a 10-inch unit. This will ensure better ride quality on the Jupiter 125 as larger 12-inch wheel size ward off bad section of roads with greater ease than the 10-inch wheels.

In terms of suspension, all the scooters in the 125cc commuter segment comes loaded with hydraulic telescopic forks at the front. As per design requirement of tubular chassis, the rear suspension on these scooters is handled by a single spring-loaded shock absorber with hydraulic damper. It is only on the new Jupiter 125 that you get MIG gas-charged shock absorber at the rear for better ride quality.

All the 125cc scooters comes with drum brakes on both wheels in the lower variants and gets option for front disc brake in the higher variants. This allows for better braking performance for those who wants it. Hero Destini 125 being a price-conscious family scooter do not come with front disc brake even as an option. Due to mandatory government safety norms, all scooters come fitted with combined braking system for safer braking performance.

Speaking about the ground clearance, the Fascino 125 has the longest wheelbase of 1280 mm while the Destini 125 has the shortest 1245 mm wheelbase. TVS Jupiter 125 has second longest 1275 mm wheelbase which is more than sufficient for accommodating a larger seat and better storage under the seat. This enhanced the straight-line stability but it is still I the ballpark of providing a well-balanced ride in the city streets.

Practicality of a commuter scooter is depended on the ground clearance it offers. Indian city roads are filled with higher and pointy speed-breakers which tend to scrap on the underbody of any vehicle with lower ground clearance. In this section, the Activa 125 comes with highest 169 mm ground clearance and the Jupiter features respectable 163 mm. We expected a bit more from the Jupiter in terms of ground clearance. Fascino, a scooter with the longest wheelbase gets the least ground clearance of just 145 mm. However, Yamaha’s stiffer suspension is expected to avoid frequent underbelly scraps over the speed-breakers.

Scooters are known as personal mobility transportation solution even for short riders. Hence, most scooters have lower seat height while some have a bit higher. TVS Jupiter 125 gets 765 mm of saddle height which is lowest in this comparison. Riders with less height can also ride the new scooter from TVS with ease. At 780 mm, Yamaha Fascino’s saddle is a bit higher but manageable due to its lower 99 kg kerb weight.

TVS Jupiter 125 vs Rivals: Features

Moving on to the features department, the commuter scooters are expected to come with lower specs in the features department but this is now changing with time and customer requirements. Starting with TVS Jupiter 125, the new scooter comes with full LED headlight cluster right from the base variant with LED DRLs on the turn indicators. This makes the scooter modern yet trendy while offering maximum possible practicality to the riders.

Jupiter 125 comes with semi-digital instrument panel with analogue speedometer and an LCD display with blue-backlit offering most of the important information to the rider. The LCD display offers odometer, trip meters, fuel gauge, instantaneous fuel efficiency, average fuel efficiency and a digital clock. The company is saying that Bluetooth connectivity feature will be available in the future updates of the scooter.

Jupiter is the only scooter that offers largest under-seat storage of 32 litres which can swallow two half-face helmets with ease. This is made possible because of the fuel tank which has been shifted under the floorboard with its fuel filler cap positioned on the interior of the front apron. Now, it will be highly convenient to refuel the tank without getting off the scooter of trying to open the fuel filler cap by placing as the key on the side lock under pillion seat.

You also get boot lamp, mobile charging socket and an open glove pocket at the front for placing which will make life easier for the riders.

Compared to the Jupiter 125, all other scooters in the 125cc segment offers options of both halogen and LED headlight cluster, option of steel wheels in the lower variants and alloy wheels in the mid and top variants. Semi-digital instrument cluster on 125cc scooters is now a norm but fully digital instrument panel are something to talk about. Access 125 and the Yamaha Fascino 125 gets fully digital meter console as a premium punch in the top variants. With the digital meter, the Access 125 gets Bluetooth connectivity feature as well.

Jupiter 125 is claimed to have received the longest and well-padded seat for both rider and the pillion and there will be more than enough space left for adjusting while on the run. Apart from this, most scooters are designed to be the best commuter scooters by their manufacturers but Jupiter 125 with its new series of innovations turns out to be the most practical scooter on sale in India.

In Conclusion

As time passes, the companies bring new innovation and unique features on their products and TVS Jupiter 125 is the result of this innovation. With class-leading under-seat storage space, highest torque output, unique location of fuel tank, large footboard, premium dashboard, exclusive chrome elements and elegant design language will make the Jupiter a better option for anyone looking for a 125cc scooter for daily commuting.

Yamaha Fascino is the only scooter to feature Hybrid powertrain that offers additional torque for better initial acceleration. It also comes with Yamaha’s trusted and reliable engine and wide service network.

Suzuki Access no doubt is the bestselling 125cc scooter in India or its simple yet sophisticated design, best practicality and higher fuel efficiency. Hero Destini 125 was a good selling but lack of proper and timely updates pushed the sales to a lower level.

Honda Activa 125 is the scooter which carries the name that is blindly trusted by majority of the people for Honda’s reliability, durability and practicality. Honda has one of the widest sales and service network which eases the purchase and service process among the masses.
